Garda Council Liaision Committees - Friday, June 09, 2006

Yet another set of committees is about to be formed with the release by the Minister for Justice of draft guidelines for the long awaited Garda Council liaision committees. The committees will be formed on a pilot basis initially in a number of local authorities including Fingal, Offaly & Wicklow County Councils and Dublin, Galway, Limerick and Waterford City Councils. The committees will consist generally of 11 councillors, a number of council officials, Gardai AND Oireachtas members plus representatives from the community sector. It is envisaged that the councils will meet twice per year. There is a big emphasis on public involvement: notice and reports of meetings must be publicised and, barring exceptional cases, the media and public may attend meetings.
