General Council of County Councils The national voice for local democracy
The General Council of County Councils - Ireland represents the elected members of the 29 county councils and 5 city councils in the Republic of Ireland numbering almost 900 councillors. It acts as a collective voice for the local government concerns of the Irish public as expressed through their 883 county and city councillors
The General Council of County Councils - Ireland provides a network for councillors to transcend their council boundaries and develop a collective voice on common issues
It comprises 3 councillor-delegates from each of the 34 councils who form the 102 member General Council which in turn elects a National Chair (Cathaoirleach) and Executive Board on an annual basis. A Director and small office team provide organisational support to the elected members. Although having a valuable representative role the General Council does not have any co-ordinating or supervisory powers over the activities of its member councils
